Assignment Overview
Using Canva
Canva is a free, web-based graphic design platform. You may choose to use Canva for parts of your portfolio assignment.
Log into Canva
If you already have an account, log in.
If you do not have an account:
- Go to Canva.
- Select Sign Up from the top right corner of the page.
- Select one of the sign up options and follow the instructions.
Creating a Project
Depending on how your portfolio will be set up, you can choose from multiple design templates. You might consider using the Flyer templates or the Doc templates. Flyers are beneficial if you are using images and want to position elements on the page. Docs are good for text portion of your portfolio (you may also use Word).
To change the line spacing, select the text and navigate to the top toolbar. Select Advanced Settings (icon: T above an arrow). Adjust the line spacing to 2.0.

Downloading from Canva
Once you are done creating, download your project as a PDF file.
- Select Share from the top right of the window.
- Select Download.
- In the File Type menu, select PDF Standard.
- In the Page Size menu, select Letter.
- Select Download.
- Save the new PDF file.

Getting Canva Help
There are many resources for learning to use Canva.
Canva Design School offers quick tutorials and longer courses. For example, Canva Essentials (1 hour).
LinkedIn Learning provides a variety of lessons on Canva, including Canva Essential Training (2.5 hours). LinkedIn Learning is available for free when you log in with your MinnState credentials.
Using Adobe Creative Cloud
Adobe Creative Cloud is available to you for free while you are a student at Winona State. This suite of tools includes Acrobat Pro, which allows you to combine individual PDF files into a single PDF file.
Set up Adobe Creative Cloud. Follow these instructions carefully.
Combining PDF Files
To combine multiple PDF files into a single file:
- Open all individual PDF files.
- Select All Tools from the top toolbar.
- Select Combine Files.
- Select Add Open Files.
- Ensure that all appropriate files are selected.
- Select Add Files.
- Order the files as needed by dragging the page icons.
- Select Combine (top right corner).
- A new combined file will be created, titled "Binder1".
- Name and save the new "binder" file.


Uploading to D2L Brightspace
Once your portfolio is complete, you will upload it to the appropriate Assignment folder in D2L Brightspace.
- Open the correct Assignment folder.
- Select Add a File.
- Select the appropriate file.
- Select Submit at the bottom of the page.
