Choosing Your Device
The Technical Support Center (TSC) maintains a list of students and employees scheduled to exchange their laptops. If you are on that list, you will receive an email from AskTech with information regarding the laptop options for this year and how to register for an exchange or distribution session. Find more information about campus device options, please refer to the ITS website. At any point in this process of receiving your new laptop, you should feel free to contact the Technical Support Center (TechSupport@winona.edu, 507-457-5240, Somsen Hall 207) or employees can contact Teaching, Learning, and Technology (TLT) at tlt@winona.edu with any questions or requests for help.
Backing up Your Data
You are responsible for backing up your own devices before your exchange session. If you come to your session unprepared, you will be asked to reschedule. Consult the articles below for more information:
Exchanging Your Device
Before your session, please consult the Returning Laptop Checklist to ensure you have completed all necessary steps to exchange your devices. All laptop distributions and exchanges are conducted in Somsen Hall, starting in the Technical Support Center (Somsen Hall 207). There, you will be returning your old device and power cord, if applicable, and guided to where your session will be conducted.
- Make sure to have all your data and bookmarks backed up before the exchange session as we only cover the process of setting your laptop up in this session.
- If your old laptop is linked to an iCloud account, you need to unlink the account before you exchange it. The Remove Trusted Devices article walks you through the process.
- During your session, we will configure your new device, restore printers, show you how to find software, and help to import your browser bookmarks so that you are work-functional by the time you walk out the door. This process typically takes 30-60 minutes.
- The hard drive from your old laptop will be stored for two weeks following your exchange session.
Restoring Data, Applications, and Printers on Your New Device
After receiving your new laptop, you will probably not be fully work-functional. For example, you may need to connect to a campus printer, install additional software, or learn more about the new operating system. The articles below provide more information and instructions for your new laptop..
