VPN Networks

Summary

Winona State University’s virtual private network (VPN) provides a secure way for Information Technology Services to give employees access to specific systems and services that are normally only available while on campus. Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client can be used to connect to the WSU network when you are off campus. This software is available to both employees and students.

WSU’s VPN differs from commercial VPN services such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Private Internet Access. Commercial VPNs focus on privacy and anonymity for everyday browsing. In contrast, WSU’s VPN provides a secure, encrypted connection to WSU resources, such as network storage drives and certain internal applications.

It is not necessary to stay connected to the WSU VPN at all times. Only use it when you need to access work‑related or class‑related resources from off campus.

VPN will not work on the Winona State campus networks.

Cisco AnyConnect is the VPN client used by WSU to provide secure remote access. When you connect using Cisco AnyConnect, all data sent between your device and the WSU network is encrypted. This connection gives you access to the same internal resources you would have while physically on campus, including:

  • Certain WSU‑specific web applications that may not function off campus

  • Network storage drives (e.g., class storage, departmental storage, etc.)

  • Printing

Which VPN connection do I use?

The Cisco AnyConnect Mobility Client has a different VPN connection for students and one for employees. Type in wsutunnel.winona.edu if you are a student and ot.winona.edu if you are an employee. Employees will need to have Microsoft Authenticator also installed.
