Creating Alternative Formats in D2L Brightspace

Within D2L Brightspace, you will see a purple accessibility icon next to most content. Clicking on this icon will open a menu of available alternative formats.

To select a format, hover over it and select Generate.

Once processed, new options will appear: View, Download, and Reprocess.

Several alternative formats are available (not all may be available):

  • Source File - Download the document in its original format.
  • Text File - View the document in a pure text format without any formatting styles, suitable for both online and download viewing.
  • Gradient Reader - Provides guiding color gradients to help with word recognition and improve reading flow and comprehension.
  • Audio Podcast - Audio playback for documents, suitable for both online and download listening.
  • Language Translations -Translates documents from over 100 languages for both Alternative Formats and Immersive Reader to break down language barriers.
    • Translated Source File: Download the translated document in its original format.
    • Translated PDF: Generate the translated document in PDF format.
    • Translated Text File: Generate the translated document in a pure text format.
    • Translated Gradient Reader: Read aloud the translated document with a guiding color gradient.
    • Translated EPUB: Download the translated document in ebook format.
    • Translated Audio Podcast: Generate an audio playback of the translated document.
    • Translated Enhanced HTML: View translated HTML content with additional elements and attributes.
  • PDF - View the document in PDF format, suitable for both online and download viewing.
  • Enhanced HTML - View HTML content with additional elements and attributes.
  • Immersive Reader - Allows customizations to text preferences, grammar options, and reading preferences with audio playback.
  • EPUB - Converts documents to e-book format to provide flexible, mobile-optimized reading experiences.
  • OCR Formats - Convert images with text into machine-encoded text that can be searched and read by screen readers.
    • OCR Overlaid PDF: Generate a tagged PDF that allows for selectable text overlaid on the original scanned document or image.
    • OCR Reconstructed PDF: Generate a brand new tagged PDF from the scanned document or image.
    • OCR HTML: Generate a new HTML file from scanned documents or images.
    • OCR Text: Extract and display text within images and GIFs as a TXT file. Recommended for users who prefer plain text.
    • OCR Immersive Reader: View scanned text with the immersive reader.
    • OCR Gradient Reader: Read aloud scanned text with a guiding color gradient.
    • OCR Audio: Extract text from within images and GIFs to create an MP3 text-to-speech audio player.
    • OCR Semantic Text: Convert scanned text into readable, structured text while preserving context and layout.
    • OCR Semantic Audio: Convert scanned text into audio with natural intonation and emphasis.
  • Math Formats (if applicable) - Converts documents containing mathematical content into various accessible formats to ensure proper rendering for STEM learners.
    • Latex: Convert documents into LaTeX document format. 
    • Math Text: Convert documents into printed English, including numbers and symbols.
    • Math Audio: Convert documents to MP3. 
    • Math Immersive Reader: View a plain-text representation of mathematical expressions with the immersive reader.
    • MathML: Extract mathematical equations from documents and convert them into HTML files.
  • Braille Formats - View the document in Braille Grade 2 format, suitable for download and viewing (a Braille reader is required).
    • BRF: Download the document in Braille Ready File format.
    • UEB: Download the document in Unified English Braille format.
