The Digital Accessibility Assistance service provides support to faculty and staff at Winona State University who need help creating, evaluating, or remediating digital content to meet accessibility standards.

Accessible digital content ensures that all students, employees, and community members — including those with visual, auditory, cognitive, or motor disabilities — can fully engage with university resources, coursework, and communications.

Who This Service Is For

  • Faculty developing or updating course materials in D2L Brightspace
  • Staff creating documents, forms, or web content for internal or public use
  • Departments producing reports, presentations, or digital communications

What We Can Help With

  • Document Remediation: Review and remediation of Word documents, PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations to meet WCAG 2.1 and PDF/UA standards
  • Video & Multimedia Accessibility: Guidance on captioning, audio descriptions, and accessible media player configurations
  • Web & Course Content: Accessibility review of D2L course pages, HTML content, and linked resources
  • Alt Text & Image Descriptions: Assistance writing meaningful alternative text for images, charts, and graphics
  • Color & Contrast Review: Evaluation of color contrast ratios and visual design to meet accessibility thresholds
  • Accessible Forms & Tables: Support structuring forms and data tables to be screen reader-friendly
  • Accessibility Audits: General audits of digital materials prior to publication or course launch
  • Training & Consultation: One-on-one or team-based guidance on accessibility best practices and tools

Standards & Compliance

WSU is committed to meeting the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. This service helps ensure your digital content aligns with these legal and institutional requirements, as well as the Minnesota State system accessibility policy.

What to Expect

After submitting a request, a member of the Teaching, Learning & Technology team will review your submission and follow up to discuss the scope of work, timeline, and next steps. For large or complex remediation projects, timelines will be determined collaboratively based on volume and priority.
