Signing into the Outlook Desktop App

Learn how to sign into the Microsoft Outlook Desktop App for Windows and Mac.

Email Address and Microsoft Login

Your Winona State email address is not the same as your Microsoft login.
  1. Email Address:
    • Employees:
      • firstname.lastname@winona.edu (e.g. jane.jones@winona.eduor first initial last name@winona.edu (e.g. jjones@winona.edu) if you have been employee since 2016
    • Students:
      • firstname.lastname@go.winona.edu (e.g. jane.jones@go.winona.eduor first initial last name followed by a two digit number (e.g. jjones16@winona.edu) if you were admitted before 2017.
    • If there is more than one person with the same first and last name there may be a number included in an email address (e.g. jane.jones.2@winona.edu or jane.jone.2@go.winona.edu).
    • Your email address is not used as the username to access your email. You use your Microsoft login to access your email.
  2. Microsoft Login:
    • Employees:
      • StarID@minnstate.edu (e.g.: ab1234cd@minnstate.edu)
    • Students:
      • StarID@go.minnstate.edu (e.g. ab1234cd@go.minnstate.edu)
    • You use your Microsoft login to access your email and Microsoft 365 applications.
    • Also known as your MinnState login because of the "@minnstate.edu" or "go.minnstate.edu"

Windows Desktop App

  1. Search your computer for Outlook or Outlook (Classic)
  • Winona State Tech Support recommends the Outlook (Classic) version for Windows. 
  1. Outlook will try to automatically populate the email address. If it does not, enter your email address. Select Connect.

  1. At the Microsoft Sign in, change the login to your Microsoft login, StarID@minnstate.edu (employees) or StarID@go.minnstate.edu (students), and select Next

  1. Enter your StarID password and select Sign In, if prompted.
  2. Verify your identity with MFA with your authenticator app or phone number.

  1. On the "Accounts successfully added" prompt, uncheck "Set up Outlook Mobile on my phone, too" and then select Done

Mac Desktop App

If you are not already signed in to other Microsoft desktop apps on your machine.

  1. Open Outlook, enter your StarID@minnstate.edu (employees) or StarID@go.minnstate.edu (students) as your email address, select Continue.

  1. Enter your StarID password.

  1. Verify your identity with MFA.

  1. Continue to the add another account and personalize section. 

If you are signed in to other Microsoft desktop apps on your machine. 

  1. Open Outlook, you will see your account in the blue button. The blue button will state "Add ab1234cd@minnstate.edu" or "Add ab1234cd@go.minnstate.edu". Select the blue "add" button to continue.

  1. Continue to the add another account and personalize section.

  1. If you would like to add another account, you may do so by choosing "Add another account." When you are finished, select the "Personalize Now" button.

  1. Then select the Finish Later button or the Continue button after selecting Appearance and Theme.

  1. After outlook app opens, you will be asked "Allow "Microsoft Outlook" to share that you have notifications silenced when using Focus?". The choice is yours, press Allow or Don't Allow button.
