Summary
The StarID is a username used across the Minnesota State system to access Information Technology systems and services.
As systems are configured to use StarID, the number of usernames and passwords students and employees will need to remember and use will be reduced.
Ideally, a single username can be used to log in to any Minnesota State system, and that username is your StarID.

What Are the Password Requirements?
StarID password requirements comply with the Minnesota State password security guideline. New StarID passwords created on or after Oct. 1, 2026, must meet or exceed these criteria:
- Be 15-128 characters in length.
- Use at least three of four character types (uppercase, lowercase, number, and special character).
- Not reuse a previous StarID password.
- Not contain your first or last name if they are longer than 2 characters.
- Examples of special characters include: !@#$%^&*()_+=-`{}[]|\:";'<>,.?/
Existing StarID passwords will remain valid until their current expiration date. However, StarID password changes made on or after Oct. 1, 2026, will need to adhere to the new requirements. Once a user's StarID password meets the new requirements, routine StarID password expiration will no longer apply.
